About Gemiprecious Jewellery Designs

Our Story

Hi, my name is Alda and I am the owner of Gemiprecious Jewellery Designs. I started making jewellery because I was bored during my recovery from a second hip replacement. I wanted something creative to do as I had taught myself watercolor painting (badly!) after my first hip replacement and wanted something less messy (or so I thought!)

I started out using plastic or glass beads, then moved to using gemstones, Swarovski crystals, leather etc.

I have always wanted to work with silver and took the plunge about 18 months ago and have loved every minute of it. What started as a hobby has now taken over my life. I am fully self taught, except for a day course on sterling silver soldering and sawing.

Over the last 7 years I have added to my skills including learning pearl knotting and chainmaille.

I have now given up my position as an Exams Officer for SEND in a local upper school and am now dedicated to silversmithing. I love the creativity involved in using sterling silver. The only boundaries to silversmithing and jewellery making are your own skills and creativity. I also did a few shows on the Jewellery Maker TV channel, mainly demonstrating chainmaille which I really enjoyed.  It was very interesting seeing how the studio worked and interacting with the viewers.

I am a Gold Member of the Guild of Jewellery Designers and proudly display my badge of  membershipon my website.

I am constantly learning and developing my skills (mainly through my many mistakes). But I love the process!  Most recently I have started learning to use Art Metal Clay and Precious Metal clay to improve my designs so I can incorporate them with my other designs.  When fired the ARC or PMC turns into 99.9% fine silver.  Alchemy at it's best!!!

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and if you buy a piece from me I hope you love wearing it as much as I loved making it.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy handmade!
