Most gem scholars agree that the tradition of birthstones arose from the Breastplate of Aaron a ceremonial religious garment set with twelve gemstones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel and also corresponded with the twelve signs of the zodiac and the twelve months of the year.

Because ancient people did not always classify gemstones by mineral species like we do, there is some debate about which gemstones were set in the breastplate and why. Because of this, different cultures around the world have developed different birth stone lists. The modern day list that you know is only the most recent list: some older lists still exist. Some also argue that the proper way to assign gemstones is according to astrological sign and not month. (Source: http://www.gemstone.org/)

It is believed that gemstones were first worn as month stones in Eastern Europe, the upper classes used to wear the different month gemstones every month in the hope it would bring them whatever properties the gemstone they wore had, for example in March Amethyst would give them wisdom, spirituality, sobriety, security and there were many different birthstones attributed to any one month. This was standardised in 1912.  Nowadays there are the traditional gemstone and the modern gemstone attributed to a month, for example June's traditional gem is Pearl or Rock Crystal, whilst it's modern equivalent is Moonstone.

Not many people are aware of their birthstone and when you receive one as a gift it is personal to you.  No one else can give it the same significance and many birthstones have been handed down through the generations.  You don't have to only wear the birthstone attributed to your birth month.  It's nice owning and wearing any gemstone that you love and which has special significance to you.

If you receive a piece with a birthstone in it - wear it with pride it is given as a symbol of the qualities of the birth month of the receiver.
